The Riverdale series, based on Archie comics, was released in January 2017 on The CW (later the project was acquired by Netflix). The first season exceeded all expectations, gathering a decent audience at the screens and receiving both audience approval and good critics' ratings. We have put together the top ten that will be of interest to any fan.
10. Kay Japa - brunette
One of the business cards of the protagonist Archibald Andrews is a red hair color. Such an image is well remembered and looks bright, but only the performer of this role, the actor Kay Japa, is actually not red at all. By nature, he has a rather dark hair color and for filming he had to dye his hair. However, even this was not enough - he was also required to change the color of the eyelashes. According to the actor, the process is rather unpleasant, but he still does not regret that he changed his image. In one of the interviews, he even mentioned that he was so used to a new hairstyle that he was afraid not to recognize himself in a "default" state.
9. The series should not have been at all
Archie comics have been released since 1939, so the idea of an adaptation appeared in the minds of film bosses for a long time. Initially, there wasn’t even a talk about the serial format: they planned to make a full-length film from Riverdale, release it for rent and, if possible, make money on it. As it later became known, there were even plans to create a full-fledged franchise, but later decided to abandon the venture. The producers considered that the project had more chances for success on television, therefore they specially invited the show runner Roberto Aguirre-Sakasa. As we know, he met his expectations 100%.
8. Camilla Mendes' Great Debut
This American with Brazilian roots must be remembered by all fans of the series: attractive and charming, she plays her character Veronica Lodge so that I do not want to find fault. But this role is the first in the career of an actress. At the time of the start of the filming of the first season, she still did not really graduate from the art school at the University of New York, and from the acting work in her portfolio was only participation in the commercial IKEA. Now she already has a nomination for the title “Favorite Television Actress” in the People’s Choice Awards, which, although not an Emmy, is still a nice bonus.
7. Archie could be very different
Actor Cole Sprouse, who tried on the image of Jughead Jones, initially wanted to get the role of Archibald, and even passed an audition to which he was specially invited by the showrunner. Now it’s hard to imagine such a castling, but if KJ hadn’t impressed the management so much, we could have seen completely different faces of the main characters.
6. The creators drew inspiration from David Lynch
Showranner Roberto Aguirre-Sakasu does not deny that the creation of the show was inspired by Twin Peaks, borrowing some of the chips from there. So, in addition to the general atmosphere of mystery and some surrealism, there is a story about the mysterious death of a teenager, popular among peers. This, of course, is not the level of Laura Palmer, but still a worthy curtsey to Lynch.
5. The whole story was supposed to happen in school
If the studio decided to make a movie or a mini-series, then we would not see the main characters studying in college. All events were supposed to happen exclusively within the walls of the school, and the main characters were supposed to be teenagers 15-16 years old. Given that in the first season the entire cast was older, the authors had to make students out of characters.
4. There may be spin-offs from Jughead Jones
Cole Sprouse is a big fan of the original comic book series (maybe that is why he plays the role so cool), which he has repeatedly stated to various publications. Rumor has it that he is even considering writing several spin-offs for Riverdale, but the actor himself does not comment on these statements. If this is true, then if we reach a consensus with the creators, we can see a new, fresh look at history in a couple of years.
3. Parents of serial heroes themselves were the stars of TV projects
The actors who played the parents of key characters themselves in their youth shone in the first roles in youth projects. So, Luc Perry, acting in the guise of Archie's father, starred in the iconic "Beverly Hills 90210" at his age, and Medhen Amik (Betty's mother) is even better known: in her best years she could be seen in "Gilmore Girls", "Gossip Girl" , and even in the previously mentioned Twin Peaks by David Lynch.
2. Jaghead in the series tempered appetite
Those who are familiar with the original comics know that this hero is a fanatical fan of everything edible. When transferred to television screens, the showrunner decided not to make him so addicted to food so as not to imbalance the overall concept of the series. So, in any case, he himself put it.
1. Love twists and turns
At first glance, they seem extremely simple, but in fact there is real Santa Barbara. So, in order: the love line of Archie-Veronica-Betty is the writer's secret weapon. They deliberately delay the development of relationships in order to stir up spectator interest. The hero of Cole Sprouse, according to the initial idea, should not have been in a relationship with anyone at all, but now we see that he clearly has something to do with Betty, although KJ Up says that his hero should be with her. Camila Mendes has a different point of view: “Archie should be with Veronica!”, She says. For all that, Cole Sprouse and Lily Reinhart (Betty) are a couple in real life. One can only guess who and with whom will be the result. You will not be able to find out until October 2019, when the 4th season will be aired.
