Maniacs and serial killers, as a rule, are people with a specifically upset psyche, but catching them is not so simple. They, thanks to their minds, lead even the most "burnt" detectives by the nose. Often, such films are based on real events and this fact makes them even more interesting. We tried to select the top ten of them, based on ratings, opinions of film critics and reviews of viewers.
10. Faces in the crowd | 2011
The quiet measured life of a young teacher Anna Marchent at one point turns into a terrible obsession. In front of her, a young girl is being killed. In order not to become the next victim of a maniac, Anna is trying to escape by flight. The killer promptly pursues her and the girl has only one way out - to jump from the bridge. When falling, she hits her head hard against a metal railing. The bum saves her. The victim is waiting for the interrogation of the investigator. She should talk about the appearance of a maniac who turned out to be a serial killer, nicknamed “Crybaby Jack”. But it turns out that after hitting her head, Anna lost the ability to distinguish people's faces and she does not recognize anyone. Doctors make a rare, terrible diagnosis - prosopagnosia. The teacher’s life turns into a real nightmare, because the maniac is already following her to crack down.
9. Jack the Ripper | 1988 year
In London, an unknown criminal brutally cracked down on local prostitutes. Inspector Frederick Abberline takes up the investigation. But the skilled maniac is in no hurry to fall into the hands of justice, and commits one murder after another. The psychopath is surprisingly smart and the inspector will have to smash his head. Under the suspicion of Frederick fall actor, surgeon and grandson of Queen Victoria.
8. Saw: A Survival Game | 2004 year
In a creepy basement room are two psychopathically abducted men chained. They will have to participate in a terrible game if they want to survive and return home to their relatives. The conditions are dictated by an outsider, heard in the basement. The bloodthirsty psycho orders the “participants” to kill their neighbor. Before you begin, you have to saw off your leg to get to the victim. For 103 minutes (the duration of the film), the author of this picture invites the audience to tickle their nerves and get a shot of adrenaline.
7. Monster | 2003 year
Eileen Wornos grew up in a dysfunctional family. She sells her body for money in order to somehow survive. At one of the crisis moments, when Eileen is about to commit suicide, she meets in a bar with a young, pretty lesbian Selby. They begin to communicate daily, and suddenly Warnos falls in love with a girl. Selby runs away from home to live with Eileen. She continues to make money in the usual way. One evening, a man picks her up on the track. He takes the prostitute into the forest and begins to scoff at her. In a fierce battle with a client, she finishes him and drives away in his car, taking all the money. Accidental killing marked the beginning of a series of crimes committed by Eileen Wornes over a long period. Selby learns about the partner’s crimes and asks her to reason. But it’s hard to stop already and she continues to ruin the lives of the victims who turned up.
6. The zodiac | 2007 year
For twenty-five years, the psychopath went unpunished and committed another crime. The police dealt with an unusual maniac, hungry for fame and universal “recognition”. He spoke with law enforcement through reporters and letters, ironically reproaching them for inaction. The psychopath managed to keep the whole of San Francisco in fear, and the police were looking for new ways to calculate the murderer.
5. The vice | year 2001
After the death of his wife, the widowed father of two sons goes crazy. He tells the children that angels appear to him and are ordered to kill people who are actually demons. One of the boys by the name of Eden believes in his father and vows to help him in his “mission”. As an adult, Eden begins to commit murders, fulfilling the will of his father. His brother, Fenton, is trying to dissuade him, but he is not going to stop.
4. American Psycho | year 2000
The successful vice president of one of the companies, Patrick Bateman, begins to get bored and is looking for new sensations. Killing people becomes his new peculiar hobby. In the afternoon, Patrick is an ordinary well-mannered citizen, and under cover of night he becomes a brutal killer.
3. Who are you, Mr. Brooks | 2007 year
Brooks is a successful businessman and an exemplary family man. The wife does not suspect that her “ideal” husband is a cruel maniac and murderer. He is trying to overcome his perverted hobby, but cannot stop at all. When committing another murder, Brooks comes into the view of a photographer who is mentally unhealthy. He begins to blackmail the offender and demands the presence of another murder. There is nothing left for the character, how to follow in the wake of the madman.
2. The silence of the lambs | 1991 year
In America, a series of brutal murders. FBI employee Clarice Starling will have to calculate their “author”. To go on the trail of a maniac and understand his psychology, the girl decides to turn for help to a prisoner serial killer - Hannibal Lecter. In exchange for the service, he requires Clarice to share details of her personal life with him. For a good cause, she agrees to a deal with a sophisticated psycho.

This film is a continuation of The Silence of the Lambs. A decade later, Hannibal Lecter offers Clarice Starling to resume their communication. Once free, the psychopath continues to search for new victims. Clarice manages to get on the trail of Hannibal, but she still does not suspect what horror this will pour out for her.
